Everyone has encountered a situation at some point when he needed to negotiate about something. This is because nearly everything in our daily life is subject to negotiation. If you want to become great at negotiating, you need to learn how to be effective at negotiation so you can be successful in your daily dealings with people. Successful outcomes hinges on the use of strategic thinking.

Good negotiators are aware that negotiation entails skills which need to be mastered so you can get the results you want. To become that kind of negotiator, you should follow these tips which are supplied by a strategic thinking business coach:

Be sure you know exactly what you want and what you are willing to negotiate about. If you are about to initiate discussions on a deal, turn the talk discreetly around as to how much money you stand to get. Remember, business is about being able to negotiate favorable terms (even about finance) for you.

Try not to let your emotions rule the negotiation process. Try to be friendly yet professional, patient and focused, and most of all calm – particularly when the other party is not.

Let the other party name figures first, rather than being first at broaching the subject. A case in point is when he asks about your hourly rate – you could reply by inquiring into the size of his budget for the project.

Ask for a better offer than what you actually think you will receive (though try to avoid being too aggressive or coming across as being arrogant.)

Try to look less interested, even if you are very interested. You should always be prepared to leave the negotiations if they turn sour. If you look like a reluctant provider or buyer, you might be able to get a better deal in the end.

Orient your negotiation strategy based on whether you are a seller or buyer for the service or product.

You may question any terms of the agreement prior to signing the contract. This is within your rights and quite healthy, so that if you and the other party can come up with better terms, then all the better.

It is best to conclude negotiations that benefit or satisfy both parties. If there are terms in the agreement that have minor importance, be open to giving them up if these will foster goodwill with the other party.

Be sure the other party knows you can always walk away from the deal because you have other options. It is certain that whoever has the better options carries the most power in the deal.

Knowing how to read and employ body language is a very important skill, so you can know what the other party is thinking, and so you can reinforce your own side.

It helps if there is a higher authority whom you have to report to, though it is also beneficial if you have a say as to how the deal will progress.

You should attempt to get the other party to split the difference during the negotiations. If they will let you, you might be able to get to split the difference again with them. If they refuse, you can hesitantly agree – thus making them believe that they won.

The whole point of progress is that it is gradual. This means that everyday there are some things that are happening. This doesn’t mean that you have to check your stats 10 times a day, but more what happened that day that is related to your progress. You might say that you do not progress everyday, and that some days there are no results; but results are not the only point of progress, progress involves analyze, it involves at the minimum some basic strategy, it involves the why’s and the how’s.

How fast things are moving

If you don’t monitor progress, you will never know at what speed you are exactly going. You might think that you are progressing fairly fast, but the reality might be different. Think of someone who is seriously overweight and wants to lose 100 pounds. He says that he gives himself 1 year to lose it. He pictures that 1 year sounds reasonable and that with some effort he could pull it off. After around 3 months, he weighs himself and realizes he lost 10 pounds. He thinks it’s great and his plan is working. But by putting things in perspective, he really needs to lose an average of 8.3 pounds per month, and at month 3 he should have lost 25 pounds already. Our man is going at turtle speeds.

Our objectives are not our life!

This is the reason why monitoring daily progress is so important. We have a life to live, and while our objectives are important, they will always be secondary in our life. And because of this, we lose track of what we really want to achieve. At first we’re all excited about our new goals, but after 1 or 2 weeks when our excitement has faded and we don’t pay as much attention as we should, or at least not the attention required succeeding, we start losing focus. Yes, the objective is still on our mind, but how much are you really devoting yourself to it? How many hours are giving to it? How much did you advance last week? Are you closer now than you were 1 month ago? How closer?

You should have an agenda no matter how big or small your goal is. Your agenda should be dated and must have enough writing space for every day. This agenda should be used for only 1 specific goal. If you are working at 2 or 3 goals at a time, get 2 or 3 more agendas. At the end of each day you should write what you did for your goal. You should also write what you want to achieve tomorrow, or this week, or at specific days of the week. Decide of a reasonable space of time to check your improvements; it can be every day or once a week or every month. Write down if your current strategies are working; if they need tweaking or be thrown away. Write down if you discovered something new. For example, did you suddenly discover a tool that you can make you complete your objective in 5 months instead of 10? Don’t fool yourself and change the deadline date.

Whatever you do, whether you want to improve in martial arts or in making money, write something everyday. This will avoid you skipping and innumerable number of days without even realizing it. Just get an agenda and start writing.

There are many things that can make you successful. Spotting trends, never giving up, having a plan, distributing your work, etc…Success doesn’t depend on only one factor, but many factors put together to make a stronger arsenal. For example, you might have a plan, but if you are a person who gives up easily, a plan is not enough and your chances of success are low.

But out of all the techniques that can make someone successful, out of all the strategies that someone can try to achieve their dreams, I can easily pick one that stands above all. If I had to choose only one thing that could bring me from zero to hero is… time management.

Realize your time constraint

One of the great things about time management is that it allows you to realize how much time you’re spending at things that will never bring you anywhere. The people who complain they don’t have time for starting a small business are the same people who watch 4-6 hours of television everyday. The people who say they don’t have time to start a website or online business are the same kind of people who spend 5 hours a day on social sites and forums; as a matter of fact, I was one of them.

Do you realize what 5 hours per day is? Forget everything like having a plan or having experience in business. A total newbie who spends 5 hours a day on something will succeed better than a lazy knowledgeable industry person.

Making the unfeasible feasible

When I was at university a while back, I was always taking 2-3 courses more than my friends. During overloaded weeks full of assignments and midterms, all my friends used to complain they didn’t have time for this or that, that they’ll sacrifice the quality of their assignments by doing it quicker so they have more time to study for their more important midterms. Since we used to share some courses together, we always compared our grades, and one of them eventually asked “How comes you always get higher grades than me with so many courses, and how come you can always party with us when I call you?” I told him how I manage my time efficiently so I can do almost whatever I want in school and out of school. I then told him that I had 3 huge assignments and 2 midterms next week, and asked him how much time he would usually take to complete and study for everything. He told me around 4 days. I responded that I could do it all in 1 day and still have time to play pool later on.

I had started my day at <st1:time hour="7" minute="0">7:00am</st1:time> with my assignments. At <st1:time hour="16" minute="0">4:00pm</st1:time> I was done with my assignments. I studied each exam for around 2.5-3 hours, and at <st1:time hour="22" minute="0">10:00pm</st1:time> I was done. I would of course revise for around 1 hour before the day of the exam one last time. And I got my hour of pool. Sure, that was a packed day, but I now had 3 free days compared to my friend, who would’ve probably taken a whole day for each assignment, with 2 hour breaks, with naps, some television, some internet, etc…

Managing your time boosts your productivity to the next level, and productivity means more success. The same tricks that I used in university 5 years ago, work beautifully now in my businesses as well. Time management, simply put, works with everything. You will need some discipline and some time to get used to this new form of life, but once you get the knack of it, there’s nothing stopping you.
